In 1922 South Park was given to the people of Macclesfield by Councillor William Frost for the factory workers in the south side of town. All in all he bought and gifted 45 acres. Over the years he built 3 tennis courts, one bowling green, a pavilion and in 1935 he and the council built the bandstand.
Today, the park has 8 tennis courts, two bowling greens, an 18 hole pitch and putt golf course, lake, two football pitches, skate park, play ground, fitness course, basket ball court, formal gardens and dog walking sides to the park, a picnic area and a large car park near to the pavilion and bandstand.
Sadly, in the late 1970s all of the trustees had died and the park, which was passed over to what was then the Macclesfield Borough Council, gradually fell into disrepair. However, in the late 1990s the people of Macclesfield started to fight back and early in 2000 a group called Friends of South Park (FOSP) was formed.
FOSP is a small group of people who love the park and could not bear to see it so run down. We set up a constitution and a heads of agreement with the council and made our plans for the park. In the first couple of years we did bulb planting with the local schools and then we did our first Easter hunt, a fun day and fun dog show.
About four years ago we started to get bands on the bandstand and, despite poor weather in the first year, the bands were great. In 2009 we tried again and had a lovely day with five bands from all over Macclesfield in one day and this year we are going even bigger and better with five Sunday afternoon concerts by bands from all over the area. FOSP would like to say a very big thank you to all the bands for coming to South Park and a special big thank you to Louise Renshaw who has liaised with the bands that are playing this year.
Please come and give your support to all the bands and to FOSP. Without you we may lose this wonderful bandstand and FOSP are only here if we get your support.
We are now looking forward to 2012 when we hope to have events every month throughout the year and the biggest party that Macclesfield has ever seen, but we need everybody to help with ideas, bands, events… we would like to hear from you so come on people, it’s your town so get involved… use us or lose us!
Thank you for your support.
